Modern Take on a Classic Buffalo Style

Modern Take on a Classic Buffalo Style

The space is home to warm tones, clean, linear elements and professional appliances.

The kitchen is the core of this home, belonging to a family who loves to cook. The house is adorned with characteristics of the early 1940’s including a flagstone foyer, original woodwork and trim as well as leaded windows. Finding the right mix of classic and current was important, especially in maintaining an open concept plan. The end result was kitchen that seamlessly joined a family room ultimately creating a space for everyday family life.

Materials: The kitchen features painted white Kemper cabinets, high end appliances including Miele and Sub Zero, Cambria quartz countertops and Daltile product backsplash.

Challenges: This project had its own set of unique challenges. There were vast differences in ceiling heights, large HVAC ducts and pipes to be hidden and entrances to the garage to be observed and maintained. The large central column housing the refrigerator, bookshelves and pantries is actually constructed to hide a chase and other various pipes. It was the unique mix of aesthetics and practical install that made the kitchen such a great space.

Junior League 2017 Decorator Show House Kitchen

This kitchen designed for the Junior League of Buffalo 2017 Decorator Showhouse was a full gut of the space.

There were plumbing and HVAC pipes in the space that required custom modifications to cabinetry. Part of the hearth has a false back on the cabinet to accommodate some of the pipes. Additionally, the 10’ ceilings required a custom combination of cabinets and crown molding to reach the ceiling.

The space contained 4 doorways so the use of angled cabinetry allowed for easier access in and out of the space.

The room includes special design features such as the wood hearth to house the ventilation for over the range, custom under cabinet lighting and a wet bar housing a beverage center and an appliance for growing microgreens.

Showcase Space

Frequent entertainers, this large New York family wanted special attention paid to making their new kitchen both stylish and especially welcoming for their guests, so they hired Julie Deuble of Artisan Kitchens & Baths at Appliance Associates.

Large table-like peninsula with hidden storage; three-stage crown molding; custom built-in entertainment center, bar, and desk.

DIMENSIONS

16’6″ x 10′ for kitchen
19′ in built-ins for living room

PRODUCTS USED

Cabinetry: Medallion Platinum
Countertops: Labradorite granite with ogee edge
Sink(s): Franke
Faucet(s): Grohe
Range: Wolf
Hood: Sirius
Refrigerator: Sub-Zero
Dishwasher: Fisher & Paykel
Backsplash: Medici Mosaics
Hardware: Berenson

In addition to the logistical issues of working in a high-rise, some of Deuble’s biggest challenges came with incorporating appliances, such as properly venting the 48-inch pro-style range. To integrate several large appliances into the relatively small space while maintaining a seamless appearance, she included custom panels over the refrigerator, dishwasher drawers, and refrigerator drawers. She then housed a microwave and a TV in identical wall cabinets.

Since the kitchen opens to the living room, Deuble needed to design it as a space to be shown, not hidden. To achieve this, custom details were included throughout, such as a table-style peninsula with decorative legs, three-stage crown molding, mullion doors, an entertainment center with wine and liquor storage, and a desk designed to match the cabinetry. Well-thoughtout details such as the push-to-open hardware on the peninsula’s full-height cabinet doors provided the finishing touches to this showcase-worthy space.

Classic Meets Current Kitchen Remodel and Design

1800s Classic Meets Current

Artisan Kitchens & Baths

WNY Southtowns Gourmet Kitchen

Dating back to the late 1800s, this “caretaker” house on Lake Erie would be a challenge for any designer, but Jennifer Hutton of Artisan Kitchens and Baths was more than up to the challenge. Looking to give the owners more space for their large family gatherings and dinners, the designer sought to fully gut and redo the space from the ground up.

A number of structural considerations were made during the remodel, as HVAC ducting, weight-bearing beams, and a staircase all ran through the room center. In order to work around these hurdles, Hutton removed several walls and partitions, lifted staircases, and raised landings, all in an effort to give the space a more open, free-flowing layout while still maintaining some classic, turn-of-the-century touches.

Modern upgrades like tall pantry cabinets, a professional appliance suite, a mudroom storage cabinet, and dual refrigerators were incorporated into the design. To honor the home’s heritage and location, more vintage elements were incorporated as well, including antiqued glass stacked cabinetry by Kemper in the Warwick door style and patterned tile floors using Daltile products. The result was a classic-meets-current aesthetic that blends perfectly with the region’s history and ambiance.

The Original kitchen in this 1970’s raised ranch was bright an open yet left the dining room closed off from the home and wasn’t large enough for the island that Joe and his wife would have liked. Joe and Tim from THI Co. had developed a plan relocate the kitchen to one exterior wall and allow for an island that would function for both seating and entertaining.

The challenge we faced was the original windows of the kitchen had to completely go. Relying solely on the open floor plan for natural light, Tim opened up the Dining room wall, removed the dividing half wall to the family room and widened doorways to the great room leading from the kitchen and dining room. The removal of the soffits and consistent wood flooring help tie together the adjacent rooms. The plan was for simple clean lines with subtle detail brought out in the trim on the cabinetry and custom 10ft island back panel. Finding a set of appliances was the next task. The kitchen was designed with the intention of being used. The Whirlpool convection wall ovens give the kitchen 3 possible functioning ovens with along with the Samsung 5 burner range. The end result is a simple elegant design that has all the functionality of galley kitchen yet the feel of an open kitchen with twice the square footage.

The homeowners wanted a hidden pantry for large and seasonal items as well as for food storage. I planned for a portion of the garage to be transformed to a full size, walk-in, hidden pantry that catered to the needs of the family.

This recent remodel was a full gut down to the stubs and sub floors. The biggest challenge in the space was creating a single room from 2 separate areas. The original galley kitchen and a 1980’s add-on breakfast room. The breakfast room was cold and had old mechanicals emphasizing the need for a continuous space. The existing kitchen area was small, cramped and did not fit the lifestyle of the homeowners.

The homeowners wanted a hidden pantry for large and seasonal items as well as for food storage. I planned for a portion of the garage to be transformed to a full size, walk-in, hidden pantry that catered to the needs of the family.

Three of the most important design features include the hidden pantry, “other room” storage such as the mudroom seat and window bench, as well as the eat-in counter. Other notable design elements include glass cabinets, under-cabinet lighting, a message center and built-in under the counter appliances.
The coffee system is plumbed allowing for immediate hot coffee and specialty drinks at the touch of a button.
